business as a force for good

Not yet a well-known concept in the Netherlands, but it is across the borders. So it's high time to tell us more about B Corp: what is it and why are we a member?

Not yet a well-known concept in the Netherlands, but across the borders it is. So it's high time to tell us more about B Corp: what is it and why are we a member?

Tony's has been a B Corp for 5 years
As the first European chocolate company and second company in the Netherlands, we became B Corp certified in 2013. Uhh.. B what? B Corp is an international network of Benefit Corporations: companies that also want to make a difference in society. Ben & Jerry's, Patagonia, Dopper, Moyee Coffee: all B Corps! It is not yet well known in the Netherlands, but in America, for example, we have been able to build a good network thanks to our B Corp membership. Why B Corp?
For us it is B Corp -membership more than just a certificate. It protects our values from farmer to chocolate fan, from Team Tony's to the environment. In a holistic way, it encourages us to keep raising the bar. How does it work?

B Assessment & Impact Report
You don't just become a B Corp. To do this, you must meet strict social criteria and excel in the areas of environmental impact, transparency and corporate governance. Every two years you must pass an extensive and complicated assessment, whereby you can call yourself a B Corp from a score of 80 out of 200. The B assessment results in the B Impact report in which we can see exactly how we score in the areas of the environment, employees , customers, community and governance. Super useful, because this gives us good insight into where we can improve as a company. We will put all the points on which we can score higher on our agenda.

Best for the World
And good news: last year we were on the B Corp List 'Best for the World'! On this list, B Corp distinguishes companies that had a total score in the top 10% of all certified B Corps on the B Impact Assessment. In the pocket! In 2013 we scored 96 out of 200 points. In 2015 113 points (we really did our best). The figures for the end of 2017 have yet to come in, which is exciting. And… if we score fewer points this time, we know exactly what we have to work on. Let's raise the bar!
