Last year, we decided to discontinue our alphabet. When we launched it, we were one of the few companies offering the entire alphabet. Now, everyone offers it, including retailers with their own private labels. Due to the wider selection, our own volumes, particularly of less frequently purchased letters, have decreased. And... we don't want to offer consumers just half an alphabet, because we feel that's not inclusive. That's why we've shifted our focus entirely to the letter S.
Why only the letter S? That's not inclusive, is it?
The letter S is the best-selling letter in the Netherlands. A letter you can give to anyone. Consumers immediately associate the letter S with Sinterklaas, making it not only Sinterklaas but also the letter S the most welcome guest in the house when Santa Claus is in town. Delicious!

Are the colors in the preview different from the colors in your PDF design? Don't worry, this is because the preview shows everything in RGB (web) colors. But all personalized wraps are printed in CMYK, we promise!
Upon delivery, we guarantee a shelf life of at least 3 months for your chocolate (except for chocolate with a discount due to a short shelf life). Flavors without additives, such as milk, dark, and white, have the longest shelf life. Tip: always check the expiration date on the packaging upon receipt of your chocolate order.

We believe cocoa farmers deserve a fair price for their cocoa. Fairtrade works towards fairer trade and better living conditions for farmers. The Fairtrade label certifies that products meet a number of criteria regarding the social and environmental conditions under which they are grown. Fairtrade is also closest to our mission because of its focus on organized farmers and a fixed premium. That's why Fairtrade has been our partner for 20 years, and together we ensure that farmers share in the profits from the chocolate industry.
At the same time, we consider certification a starting point and a means to a fair chain. We believe
That much more is needed for a fair supply chain. That's why we have our five cooperation principles and always pay the price for a living income, which is significantly higher than the premiums for other certifications. So that farmers also get a fair share of the chocolate pie.
Absolutely! Climate change is a key issue for Tony's, especially because cocoa farmers are experiencing its consequences firsthand. Droughts and extreme heat are increasing the risk of crop failure and negatively impacting the quality of the cocoa beans. This is only expected to worsen in the coming years. And that's a problem, because on a broken planet, you can't grow cocoa, and therefore you can't make chocolate.
We encourage more environmentally friendly cocoa production among the farmers we source our beans from. For example, the cooperatives we partner with receive training and support in minimizing pesticide use and applying fertilizers professionally and efficiently. Furthermore, there is no deforestation at the cooperatives we work with. We also work hard to reduce our CO2 emissions and offset them together with Justdiggit.
We also updated our bar wrappers in 2012. They're now made of uncoated, FSC-certified recycled paper. What?! Trust us, that's better for the environment. Uncoated means the wrapper isn't coated with porcelain or chalk. And FSC-certified indicates that the paper we wrap our bars in is partially made from recycled materials. Perhaps your wrapper once wrapped around a jar of peanut butter, or a package of chocolate sprinkles! The other part is FSC-certified, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council. That sounds very fancy, and actually, it is. It means that the raw materials for the paper we use come from responsibly managed forests. Our aluminum foil consists of recycled materials as much as possible and we've made it as thin as possible.
We thought it was strange that all chocolate bars are divided into equal pieces, while in the cocoa world things are not that fair at all! With the unfair distribution of our 180 gram bars, we want to make it clear to all chocolate fans in a tasty way that income in the chocolate world is unevenly distributed.
You may have noticed that the bottom of our bar is supposed to represent the equator. The parts above that form the Gulf of Guinea. From left to right you see Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin (we had to group them together in a very politically incorrect way, otherwise we wouldn't fit a hazelnut), Nigeria and a piece of Cameroon.
You'll find a wide variety of certification marks on chocolate packaging. The certifiers can be multiple parties, and each has its own name. For example, there are Fairtrade, UTZ Certified, and Rainforest Alliance. Ultimately, all certifications operate more or less the same way. No certification may involve illegal child labor, and the environment must be respected during the cocoa cultivation process. Differences mainly stem from the vision and background of the various initiatives. For example, Fairtrade focuses primarily on the strength of farmer groups and a better price. Farmers must be united in a cooperative, and there is a fixed premium on top of the price. Rainforest Alliance focuses more on environmental conservation and works with independent farmers. UTZ focuses more on farmer professionalization and productivity increases and also works with independent farmers. But despite these different origins, the requirements are very similar.
Every system pays more or less attention to social development, economic development, environmental development, and child/forced labor. We believe certification is a good starting point, but we believe a truly fair supply chain requires much more. That's why we have our 5 cooperation principles and always pay the price for a living income, which is considerably higher than the premiums for other certifications. This ensures that farmers also get their fair share of the chocolate pie.

The prices that Tony's charges in the Tony's stores and in the online chocolate shop are the prices that we see as a fair price for a living income for the farmers. Supermarkets are free to determine their own prices and compete fiercely with each other on price. This means that prices in supermarkets are often slightly lower. Tony's only advises supermarkets and encourages them to charge the fairest possible price.
Log in with your email address; the icon in the top right corner will open your profile page. Under "Edit Profile" (left), you can easily edit your personal information. And here you'll also find your previous orders, invoices, addresses you've used, and your custom wrappers. Easy!

personalized wrappers
The packaging of our bar consists of not one, but two separate wrappers. The first wrap is a (1.5 gram) aluminum foil, as thin as possible. The second layer consists of a paper wrapper. Why separately? That's because you can easily separate them. Neatly place the aluminum foil in the regular waste bin (residual waste) and the paper wrapper in the paper bin. Just recycle!
Aluminium foil
For our large bars we use aluminum foil that can be recycled via the regular waste stream (residual waste). The advantage of the aluminum foil that Tony's uses is that it is a foil that consists of one material (and is not a composite of multiple layers). This way, the foil can easily be separated from the other waste by the waste processor. Once separated, the aluminum foil can be 100% recycled. On a roll!
*an important point for when you run out of your bar: it is best to throw away the aluminum foil in its entirety (as a wad, not in several small pieces). This makes it easier for the waste processor to separate it from other waste in the recycling process. Easy does it!
Paper wrappers
The paper we wrap around our Tony's bars is made from Sappi Magno Natural pure fibres. Unbleached and uncoated. We used to use recycled paper, but this is no longer available. What about another one? Unfortunately... there is currently no alternative available on the market for recycled paper that meets Tony's criteria in terms of quality assurance, processability and look & feel. In the future, we will continue to look for alternatives to recycled paper that meet these criteria. Promise.

ingredients
For now, there are no sugar-free Tony's bars or bars with a sugar alternative planned. With our mission to end exploitation in cocoa together, our focus is on making the fairest and tastiest chocolate, so we can help cocoa farmers achieve a better future and inspire other chocolate makers to do the same. We want to change the mainstream chocolate world with this. A sugar-free bar is still too much of a niche product for this, and we don't help cocoa farmers get started with it. Perhaps this will change in the future, as we are committed to making progress in all areas.
Since 2012, we have purchased our cocoa mass directly from cocoa farmers in West Africa. We currently work with 6 farmer cooperatives; 2 in Ghana (ABOCFA and Suhum Union) and 4 in Ivory Coast (Kapatchiva, ECAM, ECOJAD and SOCOOPACDI). We work with all these cooperatives according to our 5 cooperation principles . Because of the long-term relationship, we know the cooperatives well and can support them in their (financial) management. This gives the farmer the certainty that he can sell his cocoa to us for a long time and at a good price. This allows him to invest in his plantation to get the most out of it. And you can be sure that our bars always taste just as good
We buy some of our beans from ABOCFA in Ghana, the first certified organic cooperative in West Africa. However, we know that organic farming doesn't always yield a better income for farmers in West Africa. Organic farming is a skill. To do it well, farmers must be professional. They need extensive knowledge and the ability to invest in their farms. Unfortunately, this isn't often the reality for most cocoa farmers. We support various organic initiatives, such as ABOCFA, but unfortunately, organic farming doesn't seem to guarantee a positive social impact.
For now, we don't want to make our entire supply chain organic. That's why we don't have "organic" on our packaging. For us, social impact comes first. At the same time, we do what we can to protect the environment.
The price of organic milk and sugar rose so much that our organic chocolate milk became so expensive that we sold less of it. And as a result, farmers were able to sell less cocoa, sugar and milk to us. That's why we decided to still buy the same organic cocoa, for the same price, but without the organic stamp on it. That saves a lot of costs. We have also looked for alternatives for the other ingredients that are at least as impactful. Vera, our sugar babe, did research into sugar systems, because what is actually 'sustainable'? Is locally produced sugar from the Netherlands and Germany without child labor more sustainable than cane sugar from distant countries? We chose to purchase Fairtrade and traceable sugar in Mauritius. And the milk now comes from a group of German farmers who farm according to the 'Faire Milch' concept.
The 70% dark chocolate bar, dark almond sea salt, dark creamy hazelnut crunch, and dark coffee toffee are in principle vegan, but may contain milk. Our milk and dark bars are made on the same production line, where after the production of the milk bars a “transition batch” is first run to remove any remaining milk chocolate from the line before the dark bars are made (and vice versa). Despite very good cleaning, we cannot guarantee that no milk remains on the line. For that reason, the back of a vegan bar always states: “May contain milk.”.
All our white and milk chocolate contains milk, and therefore also lactose (milk sugar). The 70% dark chocolate bar is generally vegan, but there's a chance it contains milk. Our milk bars and vegan dark chocolate bars are made on the same production line, where a "transition batch" is run after the milk bar production to remove any remaining chocolate before dark chocolate bars are made (and vice versa). This means that some milk may remain on the production line. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that it's free of milk. Therefore, we state on the back of the wrapper: "May contain milk." This includes lactose.
collaborations
We receive many sponsorship requests every day. We've established a few chocolate rules for this. We only accept requests that can bring us closer to our mission: 100% slave-free chocolate. This means that if we sponsor an event, campaign, or person, it must be directly related to West Africa (Ghana/Ivory Coast), benefit farmers in Ghana/Ivory Coast, or help in the fight against modern slavery. Furthermore, it's important to us not to actively sponsor children or teenagers, simply because we have a tasty, but unhealthy product.
And, a goodiebag then?
In a goodie bag, we disappear completely among all the other products and there is very little room for our story, which is why you won't find us in goodie bags.
How nice that you think of Tony's for this! We receive a lot of sponsorship requests and requests for competitions/collaborations every day, so we are unable to collaborate with everyone, no matter how much we want to. That is why we choose requests that can bring us a little closer to our mission; 100% slave-free chocolate. We think it is important that attention is also paid to our story, so that cocoa farmers get what they are entitled to.
