Frequently asked questions

What's going on?

A batch of Tony's Chocolonely large chocolate bars (180 grams) in the flavors milk 32% hazelnut, dark 70%, dark 51% almond sea salt, dark 51% pecan coconut may contain bristles from a brush .

How did the problem arise?

New liquid chocolate tanks are always coated with cocoa butter prior to initial production. Some bristles came loose from the brush during coating. These bristles ended up in the chocolate from the Belgian bar manufacturer Kim's Chocolates of Tony's Chocolonely, from which bars are made.

What kind of bristles?

They are white synthetic bristles that have come loose from a brush (think wallpaper brush) used to coat new chocolate tanks with cocoa butter before putting them into use. The bristles are 1-3 cm long and approximately 0.2 mm thick. The material of the bristles does not pose a direct risk to your health, but the bars are of course unsuitable for eating.

What is the risk?

The material of the bristles does not pose a direct risk to your health, but the bars are unsuitable for eating. They are synthetic bristles of 1-3 cm long and approximately 0.2 mm thick.

How did you find out?

Our bar manufacturer Kim's Chocolates in Belgium found bristles in a sieve during the production of the bars and informed us about this. The bristles were also found in reference bars that Kim's Chocolates keeps separate from each production.

When found?

On Monday evening, May 14, we were informed by bar manufacturer Kim's Chocolates about the situation. A report has been made to the food authorities in Belgium (by the bar manufacturer Kim's Chocolates) and the Netherlands (by Tony's Chocolonely).

Does this also apply to personalized bars or bars from your chocolate shop?

We can guarantee 100% that there is nothing wrong with bars delivered from the chocolate shop. Customers can continue to place orders and orders that have been placed do not have to be retrieved.

How can you prevent this from happening again?

Mistakes can happen. This happened to a partner of ours. We work with a certified production location with high quality and control standards. Measures will have to be taken by the supplier of the chocolate tanks.

What are you doing about the problem?

  • We have been informed by Kim's Chocolates and they have reported the situation to the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC)
  • We have reported it to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA)
  • The stocks of these bars have been blocked and are being withdrawn from the market.
  • We inform consumers via our website, social media and email.

I already finished the bar. What now?

There is a very good chance that there was no bristle in your bar. The bristles are only in a few strips of the relevant lot numbers. In addition, the material of the bristles does not pose a direct risk to your health. They are synthetic hairs of 1-3 cm long and approximately 0.2 mm thick. This concerns a limited number of bars where there is a risk that they contain bristles from a brush.

What is done with the retrieved bars?

We will send these back to the bar manufacturer where the problem occurred.
