chocolate shop - general
The prices that Tony's charges in the Tony's stores and in the online chocolate shop are the prices that we see as a fair price for a living income for the farmers. Supermarkets are free to determine their own prices and compete fiercely with each other on price. This means that prices in supermarkets are often slightly lower. Tony's only advises supermarkets and encourages them to charge the fairest possible price.

The little figure at the top right of the screen opens your profile page. You can easily adjust your personal details under 'edit profile' (left). And... here you will also immediately find your previous orders, invoices, used addresses and your own homemade wrappers. Easy!

How nice that you want to send a card with your chocolate order! For €1.50 you can add a card with personal text to your order at checkout, with the exception of orders with personalized bars.

personalized wrappers
The packaging of our bar consists of not one, but two separate wrappers. The first wrap is a (1.5 gram) aluminum foil, as thin as possible. The second layer consists of a paper wrapper. Why separately? That's because you can easily separate them. Neatly place the aluminum foil in the regular waste bin (residual waste) and the paper wrapper in the paper bin. Just recycle!
Aluminium foil
For our large bars we use aluminum foil that can be recycled via the regular waste stream (residual waste). The advantage of the aluminum foil that Tony's uses is that it is a foil that consists of one material (and is not a composite of multiple layers). This way, the foil can easily be separated from the other waste by the waste processor. Once separated, the aluminum foil can be 100% recycled. On a roll!
*an important point for when you run out of your bar: it is best to throw away the aluminum foil in its entirety (as a wad, not in several small pieces). This makes it easier for the waste processor to separate it from other waste in the recycling process. Easy does it!
Paper wrappers
The paper we wrap around our Tony's bars is made from Sappi Magno Natural pure fibres. Unbleached and uncoated. We used to use recycled paper, but this is no longer available. What about another one? Unfortunately... there is currently no alternative available on the market for recycled paper that meets Tony's criteria in terms of quality assurance, processability and look & feel. In the future, we will continue to look for alternatives to recycled paper that meet these criteria. Promise.
But of course! Download (and upload) the working drawing, delivery specifications and rules here.
Ouch, that's annoying! Send an email via the contact form , or call our chocophone (+31 (0)20 20 512 00). We are happy to help you find a solution!
This can be done via the upload page of our wrapper creator. You can find it here . Drag your file into the square box on the upload page and preview your design in 3D. Happy with? Just click on the order button, choose quantities and flavors and order!
Personalized bars are intended for gift giving. So uhh... it's not allowed to resell them. Surprise your bestie, colleague, grandma or neighbor across the street. That's much more fun!
Oh sure. You can save your design yourself via the wrap creator. Make sure you are logged in first, otherwise we won't know where to store your cool wrapper.
You can find all your own wrappers under the heading 'my wrappers' on your profile page or here .
Nice that you are working on your own wrapper for our bars!

Orders with a working drawing Or create your own design in Adobe Illustrator / InDesign with a working drawing of our wrapper, and place your order with your own wrapper via this page.
Would you rather place an order by email? This is only possible if an exception has to be made. Consider printing Tony's text in English (our manifesto on the inside and the piece of information about Tony's and the bar on the back) or having parts of the text/elements of the wrapper printed in gold. Wohhh!
general
When Tony's started, Max Havelaar (that is Fairtrade Netherlands) was the only existing system that worked on fairer trade and better living conditions for farmers. The conditions under which Fairtrade certified products are grown meet a number of minimum criteria with regard to social and environmental conditions. Fairtrade is also closest to our mission because of its focus on organized farmers and a fixed premium. But our position remains: certification is only a starting point and a means towards a fair chain. We believe that much more is needed for a fair chain. That is why we have our five cooperation principles.
Of course! For us it is logical that farmers deal with the environment in a responsible manner. We encourage a more environmentally friendly production of cocoa by the farmers from whom we purchase our beans. For example, the cooperatives we work with receive training and help to use as few pesticides as possible and to apply fertilizer in a professional and economical manner. Deforestation is strictly prohibited. Climate change is becoming an increasingly important topic for Tony's, especially because cocoa farmers are experiencing its consequences first-hand. Drought or extreme heat increases the risk of crop failures and has a negative effect on the quality of the cocoa beans. This is only expected to get worse in the near future. We are now offsetting our emissions with Justdiggit , but in the coming years we will be working on actually reducing our emissions. Ultimately, we want eating a Tony's bar to make a positive contribution to the environment.
We also adjusted the wrappers of our bars in 2012. They are made from uncoated, FSC recycled paper. What?! Believe us, it's better for the environment. Uncoated means that the wrapper is not smeared with porcelain or lime. And FSC recycled indicates that the paper we wrap our bar in is partly made from recycled material. Maybe your wrapper was wrapped around a jar of peanut butter in its previous life, or it was a pack of chocolate sprinkles! The other part is FSC approved, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council. That sounds very chic, and actually it is. It means that the raw materials for the paper we use come from responsibly managed forests. Our aluminum foil consists as much as possible of recycled material and has been made as thin as possible.
We thought it was strange that all chocolate bars are divided into equal pieces, while in the cocoa world things are not that fair at all! With the unfair distribution of our 180 gram bars, we want to make it clear to all chocolate fans in a tasty way that income in the chocolate world is unevenly distributed.
You may have noticed that the bottom of our bar is supposed to represent the equator. The parts above that form the Gulf of Guinea. From left to right you see Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin (we had to group them together in a very politically incorrect way, otherwise we wouldn't fit a hazelnut), Nigeria and a piece of Cameroon.
You will come across a lot of different quality marks on chocolate packaging. The certifiers can be multiple parties and each of these parties has its own name. You have Fairtrade, UTZ Certified and Rainforest Alliance. Ultimately, all certifications work more or less the same way. There must be no illegal child labor involved in any certification and there must be respect for the environment during the cultivation of cocoa. Differences mainly have to do with the vision and background of the various initiatives. For example, Fairtrade focuses mainly on the strength of farmer groups and a better price. Farmers must be united in a cooperative and there is a fixed premium on top of the price. Rainforest Alliance pays more attention to environmental conservation and works with independent farmers. UTZ focuses more on the professionalization of farmers and increasing productivity, and also works with independent farmers. But despite these different origins, the requirements are very similar. Each system pays more or less attention to social development, economic development, environmental development and child/forced labour. We think certification is a good starting point, but we believe that for a truly fair chain you have to go much further. That is why we have our 5 cooperation principles .
history
Good question. Read our story here .
ingredients
For the time being, there is no sugar-free Tony's bar or bar with an alternative to sugar planned. With our mission to 100% slave-free chocolate, our focus is on making the fairest and tastiest chocolate, so that we can help cocoa farmers have a better future and inspire other chocolate makers to do the same. We want to change the mainstream chocolate world. A sugar-free bar is still too much of a niche product for this, and we do not help the cocoa farmers with it. Who knows, this may change in the future, as we are doing our best to take a step forward in all areas.
Since 2012, we have purchased our cocoa mass directly from cocoa farmers in West Africa. We currently work with 6 farmer cooperatives; 2 in Ghana (ABOCFA and Suhum Union) and 4 in Ivory Coast (Kapatchiva, ECAM, ECOJAD and SOCOOPACDI). We work with all these cooperatives according to our 5 cooperation principles . Because of the long-term relationship, we know the cooperatives well and can support them in their (financial) management. This gives the farmer the certainty that he can sell his cocoa to us for a long time and at a good price. This allows him to invest in his plantation to get the most out of it. And you can be sure that our bars always taste just as good
We purchase our beans in Ghana, among other places, from the organically certified cooperative ABOCFA, the first organic cooperative in West Africa. But we know that organic farming does not necessarily prove to be positive for farmers' incomes in West Africa. To be able to grow organically well, you have to be a very professional farmer, with a lot of knowledge, investments and professionalism, and most cocoa farmers are far from that. We support various organic initiatives, such as ABOCFA, but it appears that organic farming unfortunately does not guarantee social impact. That is why we have chosen not to make our entire chain organic yet and there is no organic label on our wrapper. Social impact always comes first for us, and we always take the environment into account as much as possible.
The price of organic milk and sugar rose so much that our organic chocolate milk became so expensive that we sold less of it. And as a result, farmers were able to sell less cocoa, sugar and milk to us. That's why we decided to still buy the same organic cocoa, for the same price, but without the organic stamp on it. That saves a lot of costs. We have also looked for alternatives for the other ingredients that are at least as impactful. Vera, our sugar babe, did research into sugar systems, because what is actually 'sustainable'? Is locally produced sugar from the Netherlands and Germany without child labor more sustainable than cane sugar from distant countries? We chose to purchase Fairtrade and traceable sugar in Mauritius. And the milk now comes from a group of German farmers who farm according to the 'Faire Milch' concept.
The 70% dark chocolate bar, pure almond sea salt, pure creamy hazelnut crunch, and pure coffee toffee are in principle vegan, but there is a minimal chance that the bars contain milk or proteins. Our milk and pure bars are made in the same place, where after the production of milk bars, a “transition batch” is first run to remove any remaining chocolate from the line before the pure bars are made (and vice versa). This may leave some traces on the factory line. As a result, we cannot guarantee 100% that there is nothing in it, and strict vegans would like to have that guarantee. However, if this is not a problem for you, then we say: enjoy your bar!
All our white and milk chocolate contain milk products. The 70% dark chocolate bar is in principle vegan (i.e. lactose-free), but there is a chance that the bar contains milk. Our milk bars and vegan pure bars are made in the same place, where after the production of milk bars, a “transition batch” is first run to remove any remaining chocolate before pure bars are made (and vice versa). In this way, milk may remain on the factory line. Because of this we cannot guarantee that there is nothing in it. On the back of the wrapper we also state that it may contain traces of milk (this includes lactose).
to collaborate
We receive many sponsorship requests every day. We have drawn up some chocolate rules for this purpose. We only choose requests that can bring us a little closer to our mission: 100% slave-free chocolate. This means that if we sponsor an event/action/person, it must be directly related to West Africa (Ghana/Ivory Coast), benefit farmers in Ghana/Ivory Coast, or to help in the fight against modern slavery. In addition, it is important for us not to actively sponsor children/teenagers, because we have a tasty, but unhealthy product.
Well, a goodie bag then?
In a goodie bag we blend in with all the other products and there is very little room for our story, which is why you won't find us in goodie bags.
How nice that you think of Tony's for this! We receive a lot of sponsorship requests and requests for competitions/collaborations every day, so we are unable to collaborate with everyone, no matter how much we want to. That is why we choose requests that can bring us a little closer to our mission; 100% slave-free chocolate. We think it is important that attention is also paid to our story, so that cocoa farmers get what they are entitled to.
If your request does contribute to achieving our mission, please send us an email!
