Free on July 1st every year, not just this year

This year, July 1 (Keti Koti) falls on a Saturday, already a day off for many. But we want to be free on July 1 every year, not just this year. Take action with us and send a letter to politicians.

150 years after the abolition of slavery, July 1 (Keti Koti, Dia di Abolishon) is still not a nationally recognized day. This year, July 1st falls on a Saturday, already a day off for many (shout out to everyone who is working this year). But we want to be free on July 1 every year, not just this year. To commemorate slavery and celebrate freedom.

In the apology on behalf of the cabinet, Rutte put a comma instead of a period. To complete that sentence, we call on the government to declare July 1 as a national commemoration and holiday. Important, because the consequences of the colonial past still have an impact on the present in the form of racism and inequality. Only through recognition can we do something about this. Take action with us and send a letter to politicians: I want time off on July 1 every year, not just this year.

Take action with us:

write a letter to politicians here

In 2021, more than 60,000 people signed the petition to make July 1 a national holiday. Last year, people took time off en masse on July 1 as a result of our campaign with Nederland Wordt Beter, FunX, The Black Archives, De Goede Zaak and LUSH, as a statement to politics. Two years later, there is almost a majority in favor of this plan in the House of Representatives, at least if we get the CDA on board. So take action with us, send a letter. Psst.. we have already made a plan, so all you have to do is sign it. Nice then!

The past continues to influence the present
Tony's Chocolonely is an impact company that wants to make all chocolate 100% slave-free. Transatlantic slavery and modern slavery are not the same, but the abuses in the cocoa chain and much of the world's inequality today arise from it. Because we do not want to wait for politics, 3 years ago we made July 1 a day off for all Tonys to reflect on the past and read up on ourselves. And since then we have been campaigning to create awareness and make July 1 a nationally recognized holiday. More and more companies are following our example. Whoa! Also something for your organization? Then sign the statement and join us!

How do you celebrate July 1?

This day off is not for chilling, nope! But do you? Well, this:
