Goodbye Sinterklaas..

Hopefully you haven't put your shoe on yet, because it will be a different Sinterklaas than you are used to.

This year we cannot make letter bars because we do not want to deviate from our route towards 100% slave-free chocolate. Read below how it works!

What's going on?

We work together with Barry Callebaut (one of the largest chocolate makers in the world) to make liquid chocolate to make our bars. In June, Barry Callebaut produced a batch of liquid chocolate in their factory that tested positive for salmonella. All production was halted immediately after the discovery, and the factory was immediately closed to thoroughly clean everything. So no worries: no Tony's bars with the contaminated liquid chocolate ended up in the stores!

We were just about to start making our letter bars for Sinterklaas, and now the Barry Callebaut factory is closed for the cleaning.

Barry Callebaut and 100% traceability

Together with Barry Callebaut we have developed a system that makes all cocoa beans for our chocolate 100% traceable. This means that we know where every bean that arrives at Barry Callebaut comes from. 100% traceability is one of our 5 cooperation principles and essential on the route to 100% slave-free chocolate. Thanks to the traceable beans, we know exactly to which cooperatives we pay a higher price for the cocoa. So far, Barry Callebaut is the only chocolate factory that can make liquid chocolate from 100% traceable beans. Achieving our mission is number 1 in everything we do, which is why we do not want to move to a factory that does not know exactly where the cocoa beans come from.

No letter bars this year

As a result, it is no longer possible to make the letters on time and get them to Santa. So this year you won't get a letter in your shoe, even if you sing extra loud.

Very disappointing for us, but especially for you! We are thinking hard about how we can ensure that we can make it a fun Sinterklaas together. In a tasty, surprising and impactful way as you are used to from us!
