Tony's Chocolonely awarded the Golden Egg Award

Tony’s Chocolonely, a B-Corp and Fairtrade certified company on a mission to make all chocolate 100% slave free, announces today that they have won The Golden Egg Award

The award recognises the brand's mission to end modern slavery in the cocoa industry

New York, March 30, 2021 – Tony’s Chocolonely, a B-Corp and Fairtrade certified company on a mission to make all chocolate 100% slave free, announces today that they have won The Golden Egg Award through the Easter Chocolate Shopping Guide, developed by Mighty Earth, Be Slavery Free, and Green America. This is the second year that Tony’s has won this specific award.

The Easter Scorecard is a great initiative for consumers to make smarter chocolate choices and possibly give input for change to the industry, because there is still a lot of work to be done. Tony’s mission is about making 100% slave free the norm in all chocolate. The overall results in the Easter Scorecard – and the recent NORC report – show that the industry is still far from that.

Paul Schoenmakers, Head of Impact at Tony’s Chocolonely, stated, “We are honored and excited that we’ve won The Good Egg Award by Easter Scorecard for our social and sustainability policies. For the second year in a row, Tony’s efforts to change the chocolate industry from within have been recognized by a group of international advocacy groups. Mighty Earth, Be Slavery Free, INKOTA and Green America assess chocolate companies’ policies, and the way they are put into practice, addressing social and environmental concerns to empower Choco Fans to make conscious purchasing decisions – for the Easter holidays and beyond. It helps to raise the bar in the entire industry because only together we can make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate.”

Mighty Earth, Be Slavery Free, and Green America aim to make consumers aware of “what’s really going into the chocolate they buy” and have the objective to transfer the chocolate industry, together with the consumers, into one that prioritizes people and the planet. Each year they send out a survey to the most important cocoa traders and chocolate manufacturers in the industry, as they either take the largest toll or could make a large positive impact

About Tony’s Chocolonely:

Tony’s Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate. Putting social impact before profit — Tony's Chocolonely's vision is to make chocolate 100% slave free. Not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide.

The company was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used child labor and modern slavery.

Since then, Tony’s Chocolonely has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the chocolate industry. Tony’s Chocolonely leads by example, building direct, long-term relationships with cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, paying them a higher price and working together to solve the underlying causes of modern slavery and child labour.

Tony’s Chocolonely wants to inspire the industry as a whole to make 100% slave free the norm in chocolate. They believe that being a better business should be the norm, not the exception. The brand has grown to become one of the market leaders in the Netherlands and its bars are now available almost worldwide, with offices in the Netherlands, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium and Sweden.

Tony's Chocolonely is B-Corp and Fairtrade-certified.
